Top Things To Do While Visiting Western United States

Updated: Jan 10, 2022

The western side of the United States has so many amazing locations and hidden gems around the big cities

There are so many places in the States that are amazing travel destinations. I've been to California, Nevada, Washington, and Hawaii and made so many unforgettable memories. California has so much to offer in it’s big cities. You can even experience some Mexican culture closer to the southern border. We like to stay near the ocean when we go. There are lots of major cities and lots of people. We have been to the big city of Los Angeles, but tend to try to avoid it because of the crazy traffic. there is loads to see and if you embrace the busyness of 24/7 rush hour traffic the city has to offer, it could be quite enjoyable. But in a full car of five people in hot, humid air, inching slowly along, it is not always our favourite way to pass time on a trip. If you don’t mind a crowd, you’ll love it here.

Las Vegas is generally a big hit for our family. We love all the amazing hotel lobbies but tend to find our hotel off the busy strip. The smell of smoke lingers in the air, and you'll always here the enticing music of slot machine ringing in your ear, but Las Vegas is truly a World of it's own.

When I say Washington, I mostly just mean Seattle. My family loves coming here for a little break every now and then. Of course, at the moment with COVID, it has been a while. We spend a lot of time on the outskirts of the big city. We love Seattle center and all the interesting things to see there. Of course, the beach is somewhere we will always end up. though, it doesn't exactly compare to Hawaiian beaches, or even Laguna beach, it is still a nice break from the car and the city.

The beautiful Hawaii does not disappoint! Surf the wake at sunrise or enjoy a tiki lit meal at sundown. Fill your sunny days with hours at the beach discovering the island’s hidden gems, or trying all the delicious local cuisine. Enjoy Hawaii’s all year round warmth. Soak up all the sunshine and make the best of your trip exploring the island’s many treasures. The island has rooted Hawaiian culture though it has adapted to accommodate worldwide tourists. Fun fact: all the islands were bought and used as military bases during the first world war. The official language is Hawaiian though English is the most commonly spoken. On my travels, my favourite thing to do was soak up all the traditional Hawaiian culture.

California

Disneyland

A theme park showcasing all of Disney’s greatest hits in creative fun. Go on fast rides, eat yummy food, or collect tons of awesome souvenirs. Anyone can enjoy the park: young or old. The enchanted environment will draw you further into the magical land. I went when I was younger with my family. We had loads of fun and still talk about our adventures today. I’m not a thrill seeking, stomach dropping type of person so the roller coaster rides definitely weren’t for me. My favourites were the rides that would wind around with tons of Disney magic and lots to see and take in.

We loved the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, Peter Pan’s flight, and the Cars rides. Simply wandering the cobblestone streets and taking in the classic Disney. The food in the park is amazing. We especially loved the cinnamon sugar churros. I would go back to Disneyland anyday to feel like a little kid again.

Universal Studios

If you are interested in the movie industry I would definitely recommend stopping by Universal Studios. The rides are all thrilling and stomach dropping. Visit Jurassic park or Despicable Me, The Simpsons or The Walking Dead. Though the rides are so much fun, my personal favourite was the studio tour ride. Take a bus through the different movies sets with an audio guide explaining the history behind all the movies and productions. They showcase all the unique cars from blockbuster movies and all of the directors trailers. I found it really interesting to see how everything comes together.

San Diego Zoo

We had a lot of fun here until it started to pour down rain. Buckets worth. It certainly made it memerable!

Laguna Beach

California’s number one beach destination. Perfect surfing destination or snorkeling and rock climbing. Appreciate the beautiful area and enjoy the natural world. Discover hidden gems nestled in the sand and see lots of colourful fish in the reef. Consider buying an underwater camera or waterproof case to capture all the beautiful nature. Rock caves are popular and common in the area. Take a tour in kayaks or adventure to discover the magnificent coves. As a family we enjoyed the beautiful weather and warm sand beneath our feet. Our Canadian beaches at home don’t quite match up that's for sure. It is the perfect sunset destination to end a busy day. Laguna city is small and has a very bohemian vibe. Many locally owned businesses and restaurants line the streets. It is a simple coastal city.

Riverside County

Palm Springs, La Quinta, Palm Dessert, there is many warm places to go in California. Just east of Laguna Beach is this county of beautiful desert cities. Yes, it can be very warm here, rarely less than 20 degrees Celsius. My family loved this area. We've visited Palm Springs many times and enjoyed the warm weather and beautiful hotels and resorts it had to offer.

Hawaii

Diamond Head Hike

This is an absolutely breath-taking hike. My family had a blast. It is not a terribly difficult hike for most athletic people. It’s a steady climb to the top, zig-zagging up the lush dormant volcano. You are blown away by the amazing view from the top, and it makes every step worth it. Fun fact: the ground used to be used as an US military base during the first World War. As the weather is always warm and humid in Oahu, be sure to bring lots of water and a hat. Comfy athletic shoes are highly recommended. I couldn’t believe how many flip-flops and beach sandals we saw while we climbed. Finally, number one on your packing list, your camera. You’ll want it, I promise! This hike is very affordable and do-able for just about anyone. You won’t regret the sweat for the breath-taking view!

Flea Markets - Aloha Stadium Swap Meet

A very popular travel destination for both locals and tourists. You can find nearly everything here from jewelry to food at competitive prices. Perfect for souvenir shopping to bring gifts back to your friends and family. Most flea markets are open Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday. Vendors arrive early in the morning to set up their stands in the Hawaiian sunshine. The tents circle the stadium, almost 1 mile around. Traditional Hawaiian made trinkets or tourist targeted souvenirs, you have so many options. The market is all outdoor so be sure to remember your hat, sunscreen, and a bottle of water. As you move through the strip, you’ll often see some repeats of items. Now, keep in mind, all prices are negotiable. If you find a replica that you know for sure the other stand sold cheaper, just talk to the vendor. They are generally very nice and will try to get to an agreement. However, this doesn’t mean you bargain for everything, be a polite customer and admire their hard work. Learn from my little sister and don't yell in the middle of a busy little tent, "This is a rip off!" A change from the lay-back beach days, but definitely something to add to your itinerary.

Beachcombing

The Hawaiian Islands are famous for their picture-perfect beaches. Relax in the warm sun or swim in the salty ocean. At most popular beaches, I absolutely loved snorkeling. Just take out a body board and float with your head in the water. We saw so many colourful fish and intricate coral. One thing I made sure to avoid was the sea urchins. They scare me so much, just a cluster of spikes waiting to puncture your foot. Not for me thanks. Another great beach activity is shell hunting or beach combing. the shells that wash up onto the shore are so interesting. It is recommended not to take anything home, but sometimes there is just one show you can't part with. I know I am guilty for that. Some of my favourite Hawaiian beaches have to be:

  • Waikiki Beach: There is bound to be a crowd here, but it is a beautiful, sunny beach with perfect swimming water. It is right in the big city and the water is very calm. It is highly populated during the warmer hours of the day so if you don’t mind the close proximity to strangers, I would highly recommend it.

  • Ko Olina: A community of accommodation and beaches. The area is famous for its beautiful lagoons along the shore. There are amazing resorts that offer more than a bed to sleep; great food, exotic pools, and so much more. These beaches are a beautiful spot to watch the sunrise or sunset. In this area there are many long strips of lush green grass to have a picnic or just sit after a long day. My family played football and frisbee.

  • Turtle Bay: The surfing hotspot! We definitely did not learn to surf in this area. Big waves crashing into the rocky beaches. While we were there, there was a big surfing competition. It was really amazing to watch safely from the shore. The beaches tend to be rockier and windier. There are still great snorkeling opportunities in the coral reefs.

Nevada

Viva Las Vegas!

My family has actually been here many times. We love all the amazing food and wonderful hotel lobbies. Even with a young family, there is still lots to do. The kids cannot go into the carpeted casino areas so my parents would take turns loosing their money while we stood on the walkway. The hotels are absolutely breathtaking, or maybe that's just the smoke filled air talking. In one day, you could go to Paris, Italy, New York, Egypt, and so much more. Each one is so different but has the same transformative feeling to it. The food was absolutely amazing. But one thing that Vegas is famous for is their shows. circ-de-soleil, comedies, magic, music, there is so much to see. We have seen a circ-de-soleil and a comedic ventriloquist. I know that we had a lot of fun in Vegas. I would definitely go back whenever we can.
