Amsterdam has so much to offer in terms of their yummy foods. Street marketplaces, and little restaurants around the whole city.

Pannekoek

A classic Dutch pancake. Sweet or savoury, breakfast, dinner, dessert, you can enjoy this anyway you like. They usually fit the size of a large plate. You can choose from a wide variety of flavours and tastes. Ham and mushrooms, or sweet fruits, or a tower of whipped cream and chocolate.

Pepernoten

Little bite sized cookies. Fall spices used anytime of year. You can find them in any grocery store or market. There are even store specifically dedicated to all the different types and flavours available. They are the perfect gift to bring home to enjoy when you are missing the lovely city of Amsterdam. I’ve tried to make them myself at home and I wouldn’t say I failed, but it certainly wasn’t the same as the classic Dutch ones. My exchange partner still sends me little bags of pepernoten for my birthday or Christmas. There are so many different kinds; soft, crunchy, fruity, liquorice, covered in chocolate, and so much more.

Poffertjes

These tiny pancakes are a cultural hit in Amsterdam. Watch them cook on the iron and decorate or drizzle with all your favourite toppings. They are typically served with butter and powdered sugar. We had them in the Albert Cuyp Market on a cloudy morning with my best friends.

Stroopwafels

The most famous Dutch dessert. It is a thin waffle sandwich filled with gooey caramel center. And sometimes, even dipped in rich chocolate. You can find these fresh in any cafe or market stand or even in bulk at a grocery store. Typically served warm with a steaming mug of coffee or hot chocolate.

Cheese

Amsterdam is famous for their wide variety of smelly cheese. Now I say smelly because I am a classic North American and prefer my marble or mozzarella cheese, but for my mom it was cheese heaven. For me the only way to do cheese is on pizza or a yummy grilled cheese, other than that, not a fan. My mom loved window shopping in the streets and admiring the enormous wheels of cheeses.
