Amsterdam is a lively city with something for everyone. We crammed as much as we could into those short seven days, and it was amazing
Albert Cuyp Market
Wander the long strip of tents and stands filled with yummy treats or souvenirs. We spent a lot of time trying all the local food and shopping for gifts to bring back to our family and friends. My personal favourite was the poffertjes. Little Dutch pancakes with butter and sifted powdered sugar. This little treat on a rainy morning was just perfect. And yes, dessert in the morning. The line of tents went on for what seemed like ages down the street. There is so much to choose from - fruits and veggies, nuts, desserts, sandwiches and so much more. Please your taste buds with a stroopwafel or some local cheese.
Anne Frank Huis
One of the most iconic and moving museums in Amsterdam. An audio guided tour through the annex where Anne Frank and her family hid during the second world war. It was truly an emotional and memorable experience. I would definitely recommend coming here. Though be sure to book early because spots are taken up really fast.
Museums
Amsterdam is famous for their myriad of popular museums. Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh, and more. So many classic pieces of European history in these Dutch museums. On my first day, my host family took me to a windmill museum. As a group we went to the Rijksmuseum. If you are interested in the arts, I would 100% recommend it.
Wandering
Sometimes, if you can just walk with a purpose and take in all the beauty without leading with your phone, you can truly feel like you can belong in a big city like this. The Dutch canal system is very interesting to see. I loved all the intricate details of each building. The architecture is simply breath-taking. Fun fact: Each building in the city center of Amsterdam is built separately. This allows every single neighbourhood to be so unique. They were all built at different times, and according to what the buyer wanted.
A’DAM Lookout
The iconic viewpoint of the Netherlands. 100 meters up gives you a sensational panoramic view of the whole city. Test your gut with the Over The Edge Swing for only €5 extra. This was truly an incredible experience and I will remember it forever. It was our second night in the big city and my friend brought me and my mom here for the sunset. Afterwards we had a delicious dinner at Wagamama in the Amsterdam central train station. A picture perfect location.
Begijnhof
I’ll give you a little lead up to this place from my experience; so we spent all day on our feet wandering the city. We were tired but still had so much drive to see everything. My host family brought us to this little pub on a side street off the big roads. It was their family tradition to meet once a week as a family to catch up on life. Then we just took a little stroll through the alley and came out to this courtyard. It was just a moment of quiet. A moment of peace and calm. There were bushy trees and lush green grass. Wooden benches covered in autumn leaves. It was as if everything just stopped for a moment. It was exactly what we needed after the long day. It is the kind of place you just feel like you need to whisper or simply not speak at all. There is a group of houses built around the garden with bikes leaning against the brick and flowers beds in the windows. This place is the perfect getaway for your getaway.
